The mission of the Del Valle District Attendance Office is to increase the attendance rates in Del Valle ISD by providing information, support, and services to the schools, the students, and the community.

Overview:

• According to state law, students who are truant may be charged with Failure to Attend School and their parents can be charged with Parent Contributing to Non-Attendance.
• The parents of students who are reported to the District Attendance Office as having accumulated 3 unexcused absences are sent a warning letter from the campus requiring they contact the school to set up a conference to review the attendance record. This meeting addresses the State's Compulsory School Attendance Laws and provides information on other social services for families.
• An additional aspect of the District Attendance Office is the Mandatory Attendance Meetings being scheduled throughout district campuses. In the schools, students with chronic absences and their parents are asked to meet with an Attendance Officer, Attendance Clerk, an Administrator, etc. These meetings are usually very effective in determining the causes for student absences.

The Attendance Officers are responsible for improving student attendance, dropout prevention and recovery, conduction of leaver investigations, monitoring and updating leaver files weekly, verifying residences within the District Attendance Zones, and representing the District in truancy court actions.  The District Attendance Officers work flexible hours to make home visits to locate missing students.  We will recommend the student and their family to social service programs and agencies as needed.  Schools with be kept informed of court actions on students and parents as needed.

Essentially, the District Attendance Officers have the powers assigned to them under TEC Section 25.091(b).  They are not licensed peace officers and cannot take a child into custody.  The Attendance Officers keep up to date and detailed records of any and all dealings with truants, dropouts, and their families.  These are school records that can be used in court proceedings.
